Dr Julian Schmitt from the Institute of Applied Physics at the University of Bonn has been awarded the Rudolf Kaiser Prize 2023 - one of the most prestigious German prizes for young scientists in the field of physics. The Rudolf Kaiser Prize was awarded to Dr Julian Schmitt for 'the development of methods to control optical quantum gases and the measurement of the compressibility and equation of state of a photon gas in the quantum regime'.

Julian Schmitt studied physics and obtained his PhD in quantum optics at the Institute of Applied Physics at the University of Bonn. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge. Since 2020, he has been back at Bonn, initially as a project leader within the Collaborative Research Centre SFB TR 185 "Open System Control of Atomic and Photonic Matter", and since 2023 as an independent junior group leader. For his research, he received an ERC Starting Grant in 2022 and the Young Investigator Award of the Cluster of Excellence "Matter and Light for Quantum Computing" in 2023.

Congratulations, Julian!

The award ceremony for the Rudolf Kaiser Prize 2023 took place on Thursday, 1 February 2024 in Lecture Hall 1 of the Department of Physics at the University of Bonn.
